How the verbal memory test works

A word appears. If you've seen it before in this game, click Seen; if it'sbrand new, click New. Every word you've encountered joins a growing pool, so keeping track gets harder as you go. Three wrong calls end the game.

This measures how many words you can actively hold in memory at once. A score above50 is good and above 70 is strong. Rather than memorizing the whole list, notice unusual or striking words — they're the easiest to recognise later. Your best score is saved locally.

What does the verbal memory test measure?

It measures how many words you can hold in active memory at once. As the pool of seen words grows, keeping track of which you've encountered becomes steadily harder.

Why do new words sometimes feel familiar?

That is a false positive, and it is the most common way a run ends. Familiarity and actual recall are separate signals: a word can feel familiar because it resembles one you saw, or simply because it is a common word. When the two disagree, the feeling of having seen something is the less reliable of the two.

How can I improve my score?

Don't try to memorize the full list — instead notice unusual or striking words, which are easier to recall as 'seen'. Staying calm and consistent beats second-guessing every word.

How is it different from the visual memory test?

Verbal memory works with words and a seen/new judgement over a long run, while the visual memory test uses spatial tile patterns. One tests verbal recall, the other visual working memory.
